Delving into the Delights Of Turkey

As the crisp air nipped at my cheeks, I wondered just how wise it was not to wear something a little bit warmer as I stood at the entrance of Ephesus, Turkey.

The last port day of the cruise, and this was the first time I’d felt a little chilly. It was mid-November after all, nearly winter. Exquisitely, the sun was still shining. I sipped the hot Turkish coffee in my hands, the steam of the soot-coloured elixir warming my nose.

Exploring Ephesus

Kusadasi is a popular cruise port for many Mediterranean itineraries, a starting point to explore the many sites, however one of the most popular excursions for those on the history trail – as we were – is a visit to Ephesus.

Here in Ephesus, spectacular ruins of a centuries-old Roman city. await visitors.  As we walked on the marble path, marvels dating back to the 10 th Century BC in various states of preservation filled the huge grounds.

The spectacular Library of Celsus, the massive amphitheatre and the terrace houses divulged secrets of spectacular innovation, wealth, art and power. Again, a standout excursion during the cruise.

Carpets galore

No visit to Turkey is complete without a visit to a carpet factory and being spellbound by the artistry and intricate patterns these talents artisans create. If you’re a little squeamish, the silk worm demonstration might not be for you, but it was fascinating, nonetheless.

It was a lovely pit stop to experience the warm hospitality of the Turkish people. If any carpet takes your fancy, you can even purchase your favourite rug and they'll have it delivered to your home.

With only a short time left before having to jump back aboard Celestyal Journey, I wanted to squeeze in every last moment of this seaport. My daughter and I meandered the city streets, sipping on freshly squeezed pomegranate juice and gobbling up sweet chunks of Turkish Delight.

As we walked, we reflected on the last week; all the places we’d seen, the people we met and all our new lifelong friends.

Saying Goodbye

Before long, the sun dipped and we boarded Celestyal Journey for the last time. We made it our mission to try and to say goodbye to the every member of the incredible crew who had served us with such love and attention.

Many bear hugs exchanged and many tears were shed, contact details shared and final photos snapped. It’s extraordinary just how close you get to the crew, especially when the exude the Celestyal spirit of hospitality and a sincere desire to ensure all passengers have the most incredible cruise.

I stood on my balcony until the stars came out to pepper the sky. The sheer multitude of memories created over the last week were enough to overfill my mind.

This cruise was a little more special than others I had taken. I was sad for it to end. But, I knew, in my heart, I would be back to experience more of Celestyal as I Cruise My Way Through This Thing Called Life!
