Australian Cruise Season

Which cruise lines are Australians choosing this summer?

It's October which signals the start of the cruise season in Australia. Hooray! Amazing ships, destinations, enriching cultural experiences, delicious food escapades and fun times await.

And, with this excitement, there is fierce competition among cruise lines to get your - the Aussie cruiser - booking.

I often say, that while not every cruise is for everybody, there is a cruise out there that ticks the right boxes for people looking for a holiday on the seas.

Many Australians have already booked their summer cruise but a lot of people are still sifting through the brochures, watching TV commercials and scrolling social media deciding on the right cruise to book.

Which got me thinking about cruise booking trends for the Australian Wave Season. My followers across my social media channels represent a great cross section of cruisers in Australia, so why not ask them?

The poll asked:

Which cruiselines are you sailing on from Australia this cruise season?

The 10 cruise lines options in the poll are the most popular brands. I didn't include any expedition ships nor ships that were stopping as part of a world cruise.

The 10 cruise lines in the poll

  1. Carnival
  2. Celebrity
  3. Cunard
  4. Disney
  5. Holland America
  6. Norwegian Cruise Line
  7. P&O
  8. Princess
  9. Royal Caribbean
  10. Virgin Voyages

And here are the results:

Interestingly, the two brands making their debut, Disney Cruiseline and Virgin Voyages are very close, which shows there is demand for both of these very different styles of cruising.

No surprises that Carnival and P&O hold the majority of the bookings, and equally un-surprisingly Royal Caribbean and Princess are neck and neck.

What I do find surprising is the lower number of bookings for Holland America and Norwegian which are both exceptional - and very different - products. Could it be an issue of lack of brand awareness?

While I understand that a more scientific approach would be to run this poll longer and add more options, I think this provides an interesting snapshot into what Australian cruisers on Facebook have booked.

Personally, I will be cruising in Australia with Princess and Virgin this year - but I might add a few more before the season ends in April.

The breakdown

Top 3

P&O 27.8%
Carnival 23.2%
Royal Caribbean 18.2%

Princess 16.2%
Celebrity 4.7 %
Virgin 3.3%
Disney 2.9 %
Cunard 1.7 %
Holland America 1.2%
Norwegian Cruise Line 0.7%

Please note:
- The poll was posted on Cruising With Honey Facebook page and several other Australian cruising fan pages on Facebook.
- Cruisers could select more than one option
- The first 1000 votes were used to collate the data
